I'm Oh yeah, all right. Yeah and you know speaking of feeling something that's especially appropriate tonight, Eric texted our group chat that you know I know this can get too common and seem like an expectation so it's easy to forget about what a big deal it is but it is a big deal isn't it?
Yeah, man, absolutely. There's a lot of teams out there right now that aren't having anything to celebrate at all. And we can get kind of complacent with it. And I think we did, when we were in college, it was just every year. It was like, well, let's just get through the division win so we can get to the playoffs to the real fun. Yeah, 14 straight. and you hit them Yeah, and that's really discounting. I really liked what Walt said and what the players talked about. Walt Weiss, I don't know if you guys heard this, but his whole thing about, hey, this is the big one because it takes six months for to win this, you know, it's six months of grinding it out to win the division. The rest of it is just, you know, one or a couple of weeks, you know, actually, I think he said Bobby told him that. you know, to…

Yeah, so yeah, it's a big deal, man. Like, you know, just, I hate that we weren't all there to celebrate together, but it's a big thing, man. Braves Country should be real happy right now that we got a division. And after losing it to the Phillies last.

Steve. Yeah, even more to the point, you know, Chris Sale. He was saying, you know, they brand it was asking if he ever get tired of this and he's like, well, I don't know if he ever get tired of Christmas. You know, it's just that kind of atmosphere. atmosphere and that kind of attitude. So it's still a huge.

Yeah, they never tire my puns. All right, let's the Atlanta Braves are National League East champions. So they beat the Houston Astros 4-2 this afternoon. They completed a three game sweep and improved to 92 and 64. They had already clinched a postseason spot Friday. So today they finished the division race and reclaim the East for the first time since 2023. That makes seven division titles in nine seasons. The six-title streak from 2018 to 2023 ended with two years away from the top. And now they're back. and Walt Weiss has won the division and his first season as manager. So what was your first reaction when the final out was recorded?
I don't know. I was just waiting for it to happen. I mean, I can't see it coming a mile away. right there kind of popped up a better behind home plate and you thought I was like damn I thought that was going to be the one that we get and hmm And then, you know, yeah, it was It was…
Yeah, I'm happy. Yeah. Yeah.
Super happy but as Atlanta fans and sports we all know I just remember I just remember the Falcon Super Bowl where I'm Steve. Oh my god, this is gonna happen. He's like shut your stupid mouth I'm So, my gosh. Yeah, like so. Yeah, man, I do it in every sports thing I watch. I'm just sitting there like, oh my God, like even when it's obvious it's going to happen, it just seems like a formality to get to that conclusion. It just feels like.

Oh my god All right, something could go wrong, so it might. And so, yeah, it was just cool. We got that last out, man. It felt real good.
Yeah. And the clinch came into place with real Braves history. Atlanta won the 2021 World Series, of course, in Houston. This weekend, it returned to, it's now called Daikin Park, I think that's how you say it. And they won three games, three different ways. They won with power and Tyler Mahle. I'll never know how to say, is it Mahle? Mahle? That'll do. On Friday, Acuña's grand slam on Saturday, and then a four-run rally with the backup bullpen in on Sunday, which secured the postseason. season berth. Olson hit his 40th home run. Acuña and MH2 went deep. We had the grand slam Saturday and Sunday. Yaz supplied the swing that clinched the division. So we were talking about it a little bit earlier, but the seventh division title in nine years. Is that proof that the Braves' run never really ended? Is this the start of a new chapter or does really any of this only become meaningful if they make a deep October run? What do you think, Steve?
I don't know so much different rebuilding. I mean, you know, it was interesting. Yeah, I was talking about how this is the only time this team will ever be the same again, you know, and it's true. And you He can use that point wherever you want to and save the other. We were for real, you know, mostly for real, but I don't know. I think AA does so has so many different intentions. It's just it's hard to it's hard to just call us one. single type of a lane of rage team.
Yeah, this feels different than like the 90s when we had pretty much that core team was together through a good bit of the mid to late 90s and didn't really start kind of shuffling off until late 90s, early 2000s. And I mean, this team is a very, very different team than the one that won the World Series in 2021. And like Steve said, it'll be a different team now. team next year. And, um, and you know, what I can't remember who it was, I think it may have been, uh, it may have been Austin Riley or, or it was one of the guys, uh, you know, Dallas and, uh, Champaign, um, talked about, you know, there are guys that contributed to the season that aren't with the team anymore. And, um, someone played for the Astros now. And, uh, and how, um, you know, it's, I just think that's baseball now. Like, I think it's a different, it's a different landscape for every team, not just for us. And so So yeah, it's hard to say it's like. early in the a continuation or a new beginning. I mean, it's almost like every year is a new beginning. And in some ways that's more exciting. In some ways it's like long-term fans. It's kind of sad because it's like hell, it's halfway into the season before you really get a feel for some of the new guys. And then some of them are gone before the end of the season.
Know, like before the end of the season. Yeah, it's crazy. Who's your early pick for an unexpected brave who could become an October hero? Eric, go ahead.
Oh yeah Oh, yeah. So, I don't know, man, like this team is so such a Jekyll and Hyde kind of team. It could be, I mean, it could be one night we win because everybody in the bullpen contributes and shuts whoever down or it could be another night where you know, hey, Son Kim and Sean Murphy get their you know seasonal hits and (laughing) and win the game for us. Or it could just be a blowout and everybody has a two or three run home run. I don't know, man. I have no idea. But I do think, I think the surprise hero is going to be, I think it's going to be somebody like Yas, like a veteran, a seasoned guy. of who comes in, or even Mahle, Tyler Mahle, one of these guys that have just kind of been journeymen who are here and they're happy to be in the playoffs, excited to be Braves, and they've got the kind of the experience and the composure to get it done. And they have in the past, and I could see that happening.
What do you think, Steve, who do you think are unlikely October hero might be? It would be unlikely.
You know, I started to say that and then I was like, no, it's too stupid.
Yeah, I think it's coming in. I mean, yeah, he does Thank you so How long has he been with the house? Is it six year? 56 year? I mean, it's how long has you been with us? I mean, it's not sure a long time. You know, it's he's got a better presence now and he's got all the tools. It's just whenever he's not thinking of trains and. the company of the week. You know, pretty good. So, you know, I think, I think, I think Riley's going to be clutch. I think on the corner is going to be a big, you know, getting the balls off the ground and corner and just, I don't know. Okay, I think he's going to be the one. But as far as pitching goes, I can't quite wrap my mind around who's going to be a standout. He's gonna be especially when you put it up. I do think Riley's gonna be a big deal.
That'd be awesome.
And you know, guys, I mean, you guys have all been baseball fans too, just not just Braves fans, but like, I mean, you think about like all these guys who were like these huge names in October. It's not somebody that anybody really cared much about throughout the season. I mean, even, I mean, like, you know, Jim Leyritz who killed the Braves in that World Series for the Yankees. Like he was nobody and he wasn't really anybody big afterwards, you know? I mean, from him or even like Tyler Matzek and those guys that helped us win in 2021. I mean, where are they now? You know, so...
Yeah. Yeah. Well, let's talk about Walt Weiss's first season, you know, whatever happens in October, the regular season was obvious, obviously a success. And it gave us one of the strangest manager highlights that we've seen in a while in April. Former brave Jorge Soler charged the mound after taking a pitch inside from Lopez, the benches emptied and Weiss tackled Soler, helping break up the fight. Atlanta won that game. And it seemed like it really fired up the team. So, you know, his first season also required not tackling people. What do you think some of his strengths have been this season?
I think he's Just with the hell he handles like. Call my buyers and stuff. He's not just running out all the time. He's he's sitting there. You know you can just see him. You can just see him taking it all in, you know, rather than being more reactionary or. Mm- emotional. You know, I think, you know, it's kind of he's a different kind of leader, even though he took from tools from all those previous leaders. Thank you. Thank you. I don't know you can see kind of this quiet strength over there that plus you know hell I'd be scared to just want to beat the hell out of me so beat the hell out of me.
And right Yeah. I agree with Steve. Steve, what you said about how he kind of just... It seems like he's just been quietly kind of watching and piecing together all these things. And it's like you can see, to me, throughout the year, you can see flashes of things Bobby Cox would do, flashes of things Snitker did, and then stuff that's kind of his own thing, like tackling Soler. But I think... but um Yeah, I mean, I will say I was not the most excited fan in the world when Walt Weiss was named our manager. I was a little nonplussed, I guess. And man, I couldn't be happier. I hope he's our manager for a long, long time. One thing I think, and I know I think some of us have talked about this, I like how he isn't afraid to tinker with the lineup. And he's also not afraid to kind of send a message, not like a mean message, but like a message like like, hey, if you're not performing, you might need to get a night off. He doesn't really call it benching them, but it's clear that like, if you're not performing, then you're going to get, you're going to get some time to like maybe let somebody else step up and do it. And I love that. but like the message He didn't really But is it…
Oh yeah for sure. Yeah, he's just not going to give you much like he's just not going to give the other team anything. You don't know what he's in. You don't know. You don't know that he's ready to pounce or he's just cool with. I mean, you just you sit there. It's almost a disturbing calmness in the way. I mean, it's just kind of. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah, he's got fire, but he doesn't necessarily bring it out unless it's necessary. Yeah. So let's talk about, you know, what we think maybe the season highlights might be. So I put together, you know, a little bit of list and y'all can, y'all can add your candidates too. But some of my highlights for the season was Weiss tackling Soler like we talked about in September when they played Philadelphia two series in like a week and a half span and they went four and three and secured the season tiebreaker. That was real big. Tyler Mahle emerging as a number two starter, did not see that come in when we traded for him. Chris Sale striking out 11 to complete that three game sweep of the Dodgers, that might be my favorite. In Friday in Houston when we hit three two run homers, the go-ahead grand slam from Acuña Saturday or the Yaz three-run homer today which brought the division title. Any of those moments stand out or anything else I didn't mention?
Yeah that complete game of Sale's was nice. man. That was, you know, It had everything, it had all the emotion, it had all the fire, I mean seeing his family. seeing his family. I mean, that was That was awesome. That was real good.
That felt like post-season baseball. That gave me a good feeling about what it might be like in game one of a series. Yeah, that's a…

I mean, it can almost break it up into parts too. Like I think the first, honestly, one of the first part, or first part of the season highlights was Weiss taking on Soler. That was pretty amazing. And I would agree about sale. That was, that felt like watching an LCS game. One moment I loved, did you guys remember, I think it was against, I want to say it was against the Mets. That was pretty amazing. Um, when Olson hit that home run and, um, like the fans, the fans were singing country roads, take me home. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the world home run. Yeah, and it was I think it was a walk off It wasn't if it wasn't a walk off. It was it was definitely like a winning a game-winning home run. Yeah Yeah, that was a great moment chills…

Yeah. Well, let's talk about a quote that Mauricio Dubón had. He told a reporter, Jesús Cano, you know, at the start of the year, nobody gave a damn about us just coming here and taking care of businesses. Pretty good. We're not done yet. But he kind of kind of implied that they were the underdogs. No one expected anything from them. Do you think that's sincere? Did they really feel like underdogs or is that just something they were? He kind of said to you know, to you know, bulletin-board material to try to to rally up the team.
I think it's kind of BS man like for the other three. like pre-season, like especially before we had all the injuries to pitchers and before, um, um, uh, Profar got kicked out, like heading into the season with the pitching staff and with Profar there. Like I, I felt like we, we should win. So I don't, I don't know that we're really underdogs, but I think we became underdogs whenever, when guys start dropping like flies and getting suspended for the year. the but I think we But I think we…

Yeah, I think it's kind of like, you On paper you look at one of them guys and you're like. How could we not wait? I mean, the whole timeline is here. I mean, Eric and I were just. Now are we released? Yeah, he'll lose. I mean, what is going I mean? It just got so frustrating. I mean, how many times, you know, it's like. watching the game, they wanted to turn it off in the fifth. I mean, yeah, I think that's just an irrelevant state.
Yeah, let's talk about Grant Holmes. He improved to 10-5 Saturday. I don't know about you. Basically, the question is, would you feel good giving him a postseason start in a three or four man rotation in the postseason? He tends to get pretty good results, but it never looks good. He's always given up line drives left and right. So what do you guys think about Holmes in the postseason? I think…
I mean, I don't know. I think if you, you, I don't want to call it a bull, like him, him, a guy that you would set up into a bullpen type game. I mean, yeah, yeah. But he's the guy you start and then you have like Smith-Shawver or, or, or somebody else that can ready to take over two or three innings after, uh, after he, cause he feels great for four innings. I think you might get…

Yeah, that's gonna be a challenge. I don't know. I mean, it's a good question. We I think we worry all of us have spoken about that already. We've in our checks many times. I don't know. Yeah, I don't I don't know my confidence level honestly.

You know, Martín Pérez is great, but you kind of want people that strike guys out in the postseason. Yeah. Let's talk about Robert Suarez. He was awesome for the first, I don't know, couple months of the season. When he got hurt, he had a 0.56 ERA. You know, we need to see his velocity command and recovery. If he resembles the pitcher from the first half, That would be a great arm to add to the bullpen. What would you need to see before putting him on the postseason roster? And would you trust him in a close game immediately? What do you think Steve? Would you trust him right away? Would you trust him in October?
I don't know. I mean, you know, you also kind of going back to the Holmes thing. I mean, if you do put Holmes in the bullpen. I feel better about him than for his. I mean, that's just.

Let's talk about the record of the team. You know, we've talked about in our on our text threads how this is a bipolar team. Sometimes it seems like they're winning with smoke and mirrors. They've got a great record, but how confident are you in that record? Does the record reflect how good they actually are or have they been winning with smoke and mirrors this season? What do you think, Eric?
Oh, I wouldn't think it's smoke and mirrors. I mean, I think I think it's they've got a really, really good team of guys who don't perform sometimes. And then when they do, it's not smoke and mirrors. It's just they're they're they're playing up to their potential. And so I mean, and, you know, it's like, I know it's a baseball cliche of like a different hero every night kind of thing, but they've kind of had that going. And I don't really think that's smoke and mirrors. I mean, smoke and mirrors doesn't win you a division. Smoke and mirrors, you know, get you a wild card spot. or a couple big wins on... there Apple TV on Sunday night or something like that. That's about it. What do you think, Steve? Are they for real…
Are they for real? You know, I don't think there's any kind of tricks or smoke and mirrors going on. I think what's it is, and I think Jeff, you even, I don't know, you or Eric or Matt said it as like, there's this strange parity. amongst the top the teams with the top rec is really stand out. Nob is taken lead. Not really. everybody has like a s or six games and then a s There's just Nobody is a stand down. Scaring anybody. I think we're all in this kind of weird even pavement right now. It's just right yeah i think it's because i'm because everybody i don't know everybody's got the same kind of heroes and the same kind of duds i mean it's I mean, it's just some things. It's just there's a lot of barrier amongst the league and honestly, I don't remember last time we seen seen it quite like this.
Yeah. So let's talk about Acuña. Mark Bowman, the beat reporter, said that he widened his stance a few weeks ago and that's been a key to him getting hot lately. You know, some of you guys think his production of visible effort don't always match his talent. Does this hot streak change how you feel about him going into October? Do you think he can get hot and carry the team or do you guys still not trust him? What are your thoughts?
I mean, I think he's already hot. Like I mean, he's he's doing he He's in the top three of hitters in September in Major League Baseball. He's great. Is he consistently great? I don't know that he is. I'll tell you what, if the game's on the line... And I don't know And you nailed it when you said you got a lot of stat information, but just like my heart tells me if like the games online, if it's game seven of an NLCS or game, an elimination game of, or deciding game of the divisional series. The game's a one. And I got to have a hit or got to have a pop fly to tag a runner in. I'd rather have Baldwin. I'd rather have... Olson. Yeah, or honestly, I'd even rather have Ozzie up there. And I know their numbers don't.

I'm there. and don't show it and they may not hit a grand slam, but they're also not going to do something stupid and get thrown out. So I don't know. And I know that may not be the prevailing attitude among low space fans. I mean, he's a phenomenal talent. I mean, the guy's amazing. But there's just something about the way he projects himself that I don't I just don't know that I don't know that he's playing for the Atlanta Braves. I think he's playing for Ronald Acuña. And I don't and I don't think that's I know some people will say that's like a cultural thing that a lot of Latin players play that way. But I don't I don't see that like I said I see like Tatis who's definitely like that and he's he's fiery. But he's not And I don't-- I don't know. I don't know. I don't really know how to articulate it better than I have. But yeah, I mean, I'm glad he's Atlanta Brave. I mean, I would hate it. Yeah. for him to be playing for somebody else, but I think he will be before too much longer, but I would hate to. know, face him with the game on the line, but I'd also I don't feel we're comfortable as a fan with him up. He's like damn on the line either. Yeah. Also...
I don't know. It's all kind of inconsequential. There's nothing we can do about it. We got him. You know, we got to utilize him if he's feeling good, make the most of him. You know, like, you know how I feel about him, you know, waivers from day to day. But, you know, if you're asking me on the confidence level, I mean, right now, I mean. doing great. He's the kid we always want. I mean, he's still super young. He's still got everything to prove. He's still he's not gonna end, you know, whether he changes his stance or not, you know, you know, I still want the guy, you know, in those in those hard decisions, you know, in those those bottom of the ninth game situations. But I mean, you know, there is there is an element to his game that is so frustrating. And, you know, like Eric said, he's playing for himself. I mean, these, you know, it's not that I want to even get into it. It's just it's obvious. Everybody, all of Atlanta radio says the same thing. It's not just us. It's this half ass run into first. It's this, you know, look at me, you know, doing my wings, bubble my chest.
I love that stuff. I love it. Give me all the wings. Give me all the talking to the opposing day. Well, I like it. I like it. or you don't score. He does lose focus and make boneheaded plays for sure. I won't dispute that at all, but he's one of the few guys in the league that if he gets hot, he can carry a team to the World Series. So I love that.

Now what is this? I mean, bother I mean, whether it bothers you or not, I mean, I could ignore it and just move on my life. Well, the objective has changed tonight. We no longer need to win the division race. We need to set up for October. So, you know, we talked about Riley and Murphy sat today. Acuña moved to DH. Hicklen started right. Drake Baldwin caught in our high leverage late inning relievers received a break. You know, what's your feeling on rest versus rust? You know, should we give players off time off this week to get him rested for the. the playoffs or are you worried that that's going to break the rhythm and make them rusty?
Yeah, I don't like that. You know, regular day players don't give them too much time off.
Yeah and think about like just. just the last several years, how far wild card teams have gone into it. It's really all about who's hot right now. And if you're like, yeah, let's let's not cool you off. Um, you know, because we, we won the division a couple years ago, we won the division a little too early almost and, um, and rested those guys. And then, and then we roll into the Philadelphia series and just look flat. Um, and I gotta hate that. So And if you're hot, like Yeah, I mean, if you got to arrest somebody because of, you know, but he's got a professional. So I mean, they're not. Pictures maybe. I can see, you know, Baldwin's, you know, put Murphy in there, let him sacrifice his knees, get something out of him. Yeah.

Alright guys, we're wrapping up any final thoughts on the season, clinching the division. Your thoughts on the post-season, what are you guys thinking?
I'm ready for it, man. Um, um, right. man, I think we're excited. It's playoffs, playoff baseball is one of those things that, you know, as we get older, you realize how lucky you are to to to be able to experience it with your friends and your family and other other fans and and and, you know, just make the most of it and enjoy it because, you know, it only happens. It's it's rare that your team makes it that far. And if they do, you know, it's sometimes even more rare that they advance. and so just enjoy it because you don't always have that opportunity.

I don't know No, you guys have, we argue all the time online, but we've pretty much been in agreement about 90% of the time tonight. So, surprising, but yeah, no, I agree with pretty much everything you all say. Yeah, like Eric was saying, I don't think, maybe rest them the last day and don't push Chris Sale to 120 pitches or anything crazy like that. But keep them playing, don't rest them too much. We've seen... how resting the Braves players works out. We always seem to flop in the first round, so keep them going. Yep. All right. Thank you all for listening.
